Cwtch for the Community

In a recent gathering of our bar managers before Christmas, it came up in conversation that they wanted to do something to help the homeless population here in Newport and Cardiff.

Enter Cwtch for the Community.

We approached Solas Cymru who do incredible work looking after vulnerable people, and asked them if they’d like to partner with us. With sites across South Wales, they tirelessly work to get people off the streets, with some specialist services looking after women, children and families. They loved our idea (and the prospect of getting much needed donations!) and it was agreed upon: you bring stuff in to our bars for them, and we’ll give you a cwtch. Cwtch the beer, that is. We like clever plays on words, we do.

We’ve got a price list based upon what they need the most, and each corresponds to how many Cwtches we’ll give you back, with sleeping bags and socks being among the most valuable items. This isn’t an exhaustive list, though, and we’re not going to turn viable donations away. It’s just a collaboration of what they’re after the most, rather than the only things we’re taking. There’s no end to what’s needed.

Just bear in mind, we don’t want your shirts that have gone grey from one too many washes; socks with holes in them or mugs with years worth of tea stains: everything has to be in excellent condition - underwear and socks have to be new, food unopened and in date.

As with general service in the bars, our Challenge 25 policy applies and you’ll only be served if you’re carrying a valid form of ID. There’s a maximum of 6 cans per person donating (though if you want to bring in more than this, we are certainly not going to stop you!) and we ask that you take your cans with you to cwtch-up at home with.

If you’d just like to donate something, with nothing in return, well that’d just be really cool of you. We’ll probably give you a high five or a thumbs up anyway.

You’ll be able to donate throughout opening hours on Sunday 18th March at our three bars until stocks last:

Brewery Bar - Wern Ind. Estate, Newport NP10 9FQ

Newport Centre Bar - 22-23 High Street, Newport NP20 1FX

Cardiff Bar - 25 Westgate Street, Cardiff CF10 1DD
